River, Our Much-Loved PAT Dog

Community News · Chanctonbury Care

Our gorgeous PAT dog River, owned by Oaklands Court's administrator Jacquie Hendry, is such an asset to the team. Having passed a temperament assessment to become a registered Pets As Therapy dog, River comes to work every day just as we do, to bring joy and comfort to those in need — and is ever keen to join in with the Christmas dressing-up theme!

Why animal visits matter

Stroking a calm, friendly dog can lower stress, lift mood and spark conversation — especially for residents living with dementia, who may find words hard but respond instantly to a warm presence and a wagging tail. River's rounds through the lounges often turn an ordinary afternoon into the highlight of the week.

Whether it is a gentle head resting on a knee or simply the laughter a dog brings through the door, moments like these are a reminder that a care home should feel full of life. River is very much part of the Oaklands Court family — and he knows exactly which residents keep a biscuit or two aside for him.
